About VIVA Drops®
In 1986, Baltimore-based optometrist and Ph.D. Roy Rengstorff saw a need for an improved ophthalmic solution applied topically to the eye to protect and lubricate mucous membrane surfaces and relieve dryness and irritation. After extensive experimentation and testing, he invented Vit-A-Drops, which he later named VIVA Drops®.
In the late 1980's, Doctor Rengstorff began by having his eye drops made by a contract manufacturing company. Because the drops were so effective, the demand was strong and the sales increased rapidly. Early in the 1990's, Doctor Rengstorff along with a good friend and former classmate, Doctor Charles J. Krall, established an aseptic-fill facility to produce VIVA Drops® in Doctor Krall's hometown of Mitchell, South Dakota. The company was known as Vision Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
In 1996, Doctor Rengstorff suddenly passed away. His untimely passing put the VIVA Drops® product and company's future under a cloud of uncertainty. In 2006, Doctor Krall also passed away. The dedication and tireless efforts of Doctors Rengstorff and Krall not only provided a superior eye medication but it produced a dedicated and capable organization in Mitchell, South Dakota. Their encouragement and leadership was sorely missed.
In 2008, the assets of Vision Pharmaceutical were purchased by Dakota Laboratories, LLC. After a brief period of being unavailable, VIVA Drops® are once again being produced in Mitchell, South Dakota.
With the original experienced, dedicated staff and vigorous new leadership, VIVA Drops® have a bright future.
